XBOX Live Silver lets you connect to the internet and download things.
XBOX Live Gold lets you play games online with others.
You should be able to get XBOX Live Silver for free if you haven’t got it set it up already. You can get XBOX Live Gold for free as well but it only lasts a month and after that you have to pay or create a new account and lose your stats/screenname/etc.
